Seebodenalp to Rigi Kaltbad, Mt. Rigi

Seebodenalp to Rigi Kaltbad is a 5km hiking trail on Mt. Rigi, spanning from Canton Schwyz to Lucerne, accessible by cable car from Küssnacht am Rigi.

This moderate 5km trail on Mt. Rigi links Seebodenalp (Canton Schwyz) to Rigi Kaltbad (Lucerne), offering panoramic views over Lake Lucerne. The route starts as an easy flat walk before a steep middle section that levels out at the Känzeli observation deck. Autumn is the best time to visit for fewer crowds and cow-free pastures. Note that leash laws change at the cantonal border (around the 2km mark), making this a great, varied hike for dogs.

Getting There

Take the cable car from Küssnacht am Rigi (Seilbahn); the bus stop is right at the gondola station. If you're driving, parking is available at the base or up at Seebodenalp near the trailhead. Once at the top, follow the yellow hiking signs toward Rigi Kaltbad.

On the Trail

• KM 0–2: Flat and relaxed with great views.
• KM 2–4: The "work" section. It gets steep here as you climb toward the Känzeli observation deck.
• KM 4–5: Much easier. A flat finish into Rigi Kaltbad.

Leash Laws: You’ll cross from Canton Schwyz into Lucerne around the 2.3km mark. Schwyz requires leashes year-round, while Lucerne allows off-leash roaming (seasonal rules apply—see Practical Info).

Abby's Highlight

Abby loved the freedom! We visited in late October when it was crisp and quiet. Since the cows had already left the pastures, it was a very relaxed experience. She handled the steep middle section like a pro, zooming ahead and waiting patiently for us to catch up at the top.

At the Top

Rigi Kaltbad has plenty of restaurants and bathrooms. We celebrated with a fondue before catching the cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm for even higher views.
